Roger Gyles was a judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 1999 to 2008. Prior to that appointment he had an extensive practice as King's Counsel, appearing in all Australian jurisdictions and in the courts of Singapore , Papua-New Guinea, Fiji and the Solomon Islands and in the Privy Council in London. He was President of both the New South Wales and Australian Bars.
Since 2009, Roger has practised as an arbitrator, mediator and expert determiner . He has also conducted various inquiries and held several part-time appointments. He is a Fellow of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, a member of the Asian International Arbitration Centre panel of Arbitrators, a member of the Australian Disputes Centre panel of Mediators, an Independent Assurer of Settlements for the Australian Taxation Office, and a Member of the ACICA Mediation Panel.
He has been engaged in ad hoc arbitrations and those administered by the ICC, SIAC, ACICA and CAS. He has been engaged to arbitrate , determine or evaluate domestic and international disputes across a range of areas including building construction, civil construction, port charges, gas pricing, oil and gas off-shore marine infrastructure, long term mineral supply contracts, an across border joint venture, a shareholders agreement, insolvency claims, product liability, banking / customer, information technology systems, a long term management agreement, a waste management agreement breach of a soccer coaching contract and a claim against a government for misfeasance. He has given expert evidence as to Australian constitutional law in an ICSID arbitration.
He has mediated many disputes across most areas of commerce and industry.
